30 cars and 90 years of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 22/30 :The Porsche 956 (1982)

On the 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has selected thirty historic cars grouped into three per decade, all up for public vote by race fans. To participate, click HERE and choose one per decade. The vote is open until the 15th of January 2013. Each of the thirty cars will have a short introduction. Today it is the Porsche 956 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1982.

The 50th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans marked the beginning of a new technical regulations for prototypes, called 'Group C'. Porsche do not miss the opportunity with the 956. The first prototype with enclosed cockpit (made ​​mandatory at the time) developed by the Porsche since the legendary Le Mans-winning 917 in 1970 and 71, it used an engine based on that of the 936, that won in 1976, 77 and 81. Three factory 956 were entered and finished in the top three in the order of their racing numbers. It was the sixth and final success in La Sarthe for Jacky Ickx. Subsequently, the Porsche 956 would be sold to private teams, and no fewer than eleven raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1983 and fifteen in 1984, seven in 1985 and 1986. After four consecutive victories for the 956 up to 1985, and two more for its descendant, the 962 C. Porsche has six seasons of unchallenged domination in the early years of the era of Group C
