24 Hours of Le Mans - LMGTE Am winners new to the top step

Aston Martin Racing driver since 2015, surprising though it may seem, given his consistency, Marco Sørensen had never taken a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The triumph is a first too for Ben Keating, who before this year had never driven the same car twice at the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans.

Ben Keating

"It’s a really special win. This is my eighth Le Mans and the first seven were with seven different cars. Last year when we came second with the TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage, I felt with such a good car I had to come back and do it again. To be a step higher on the podium is really special. But to me, what made it extra special is how we won. We didn’t win on pace. the Porsches were about two seconds a lap quicker. We had a perfect race. We had great pit stops. No off-track excursions. No punctures. No penalties. no mistakes from anyone the whole race. We just kept plugging along. We got lucky with the safety car and every driver did a great job.

Twelve hours into the race, I didn’t think we stood a chance. I backloaded all of my drive time. When I got out for a triple stint with an hour and a half left, I couldn't believe we had an 80-second lead, and that's when I started to think we could do it. It's a very special day."

"The win has been a long time coming. We've had so many opportunities when we had the pace but it didn't stick. This year, we made it. It was emotional with three laps to go I could feel it in the pit of my stomach, and I dared to say to myself “we might win this”. I tried to push it aside and focus on my driving.  When you cross the finish line you realise. And on the in lap, it hits you how special it is to win Le Mans. That's when the real emotion comes. It felt amazing. The boys did an amazing job throughout the whole of this long race week, in practice and the race itself.

I remember in the practice, we even said to Ben, 'do you think you could go just a little bit quicker?', and in the race, yes, apparently, he could! [laughing]. It's great to share a car with guys like this."

Tom Ferrier, Director of TF Sport

"This is incredible. I didn’t even dream of doing it the first time! So doing it for a second is pretty mind-blowing to be honest and it still feels like a dream now. We had a bit of an issue at the start with a tyre delamination on the #33 which lost us a bit of time and then we got into the night. The game plan was always to be as strong as possible and not make any mistakes. The plan worked and it paid off, we got the safety car break and from there on in it was a nail-biting few hours! All drivers were incredible and Ben was absolutely unbeatable!”
