24 Hours of Le Mans – Reactions from the LMP2 and LMP2 Pro/Am winners

The winners of the LMP2 class and LMP2 Pro/Am classes gave their impressions of a hard-fought race.

#31 Oreca 07-Gibson – Team WRT

Robin Frijns: "The team did an amazing job by basically leading, with both cars through the night and coming out unscratched. I think both cars were really amazing. We had really good pace and were a bit quicker than Jota. But then the last time I jumped in we suffered big issues suddenly. The air bag died, and we ended up with new tyres at front, old on rear and vice-versa. Basically everything went wrong in the last two hours. Then I lost pace as I think something broke on the car. The Jota was catching very quickly by 4-5 seconds a lap. I was secure in P2 but struggling with the car. Then, heading into the last lap, I heard on the radio that the sister car had broken down and stopped. I was still fighting to try to secure P2 and suddenly found myself fighting for P1. That’s a different load on your shoulders. I think the finish was as close as it gets. Obviously the two Toyotas were in front of me and they slowed down for the photo at the finish but I was pushing for the win and so I tried to find my way around them and saw the chequered flag guy a bit late!"

Ferdinand Habsburg: "I’m told the last Austrian winner before me was Alex Wurz. I saw him on the podium. We have worked together on Austrian TV. I’m looking forward to talking to him about all this. The feeling is so crazy, we started the week by winning the sustainable development trophy with my Drive Fast, Act Faster project. I said, ‘we won the first trophy’ and hopefully we’ll win the big one, which is why we’re really here. And in the end, we did it. For a long time we were happy to secure P2 and take the trophy home.  But then to win, with Robin flying at the end and me being able to count on my teammates so much it gives me so much confidence for the rest of the season. I’m so happy to share this with my old friend Robin and my new teammate firy redhead Charles Milesi. »

Charles Milesi: "We know from previous races that everything can change in the last lap. It’s a shame for the team because the one-two would have been great. But I think we deserve the win."

#21 Oreca 07-Gibson – DragonSpeed USA

Henrik Hedman: "There’s no better feeling [than to win at Le Mans]. It’s fantastic what the team has done. We’ve been here four times before and struggled with the car. To come back a fifth time I think was an advantage, the team knows how to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans and that paid off today."

Juan-Pablo Montoya: " The three of us have a really nice chemistry. We did a good job, all three of us. Our job is to beat the pros and Henrik’s is to beat the ams and he did that."

Ben Hanley: "It was a tough race, with difficult conditions, especially at the start. It was about having a clean race, it always is at Le Mans. Today was just about clean. At least cleaner than our competitors, which is all you need, to spend the least time in the pits."
