Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup: an incredible first lap on-board the Ligier JS P3 with DC Racing

Competitors in the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup, the championship organised by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) on the Sepang international circuit, are now gearing up for the second round of the season, to be held 5-7 August. Let’s take a look at some of the track action from round 1 in this breath-taking video shot with an on-board camera.

The Ligier JS P3 fielded by David Cheng Racing got off to an exceptional start during the second race in the first round of the 2016 Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup. The car driven by James Winslow and Dean Koutsoumidis set off from the back of the grid but managed to fight through to second place in just one lap. Admittedly, there are not that many cars on the track but the quality of driving is undeniable. The cars in the GT class were soon left behind, unable to compete with the prototype’s superior power. Then came the smaller prototypes, whose slower cornering speed meant the Ligier JS P3 was able to push past. However, up against rivals in his own class, James Winslow had to make some carefully timed moves and meticulously control his accelerations to make it through. A great demonstration of the art of overtaking.

The Ligier JS P3 from DC Racing found itself at the back of the grid because of gearbox issues. In fact, the car was unable to take part in qualifying and the first race of the weekend. Fortunately, a helping hand came from Team AAI, another competitor in the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup, and the car was repaired. In the end, DC Racing came second in the second race. It now has its eye on the top spot on the podium at the next round!
