24 Hours of Le Mans 1970-2015 - 45 Porsche stories (16)

A three-time winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Porsche 936 got its second wind in 1982 and '83 thanks to Reinhold Joest.

In 1982, the new Prototypes regulations called Group C called for closed cockpit cars. Porsche launched its new 956 to replace the 936. But the 936 was still at the start of the 50th edition of the 24 Hours. To comply with the new regulations, Reinhold Joest modified the 936, consequently calling it the 936 C. It competed in the 24 Hours twice, in the hands of two Belgian brothers, Jean-Michel and Philippe Martin who had as a teammate French driver Bob Wollek in 1982, then a third Belgian, Marc Duez, in 1983. Both participations ended in retirements.

In 1983, like many other private teams, Joest also entered a 956. In 1984 et '85, it won the first two of his 15 victories at Le Mans.
