How Ford claimed class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (video)

Ford didn’t do things by halves in La Sarthe this year. The American marque entered four GTs for LM GTE Pro to mark its return to Le Mans and won the class at the first attempt.

What better anniversary present? This year’s return was to celebrate the anniversary of Ford’s first win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 when Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon’s #2 Ford GT 40 Mk.II took outright victory. The constructor went on to win Le Mans again in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

On Sunday 19 June this year Ford made a historical comeback by fending off tough competition from the Ferrari F488s, particularly the #82 fielded by Rizi Competizione, which came second. The winning #68 was driven by Joey Hand, Dirk Müller and local man Sébastien Bourdais. Ford even took the liberty of placing a second car on the podium. The #69 driven by Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Richard Westbrook came third.

Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK’s #66 crew of Stefan Mücke, Olivier Pla and Billy Johnson came fourth while the #67 driven by Marino Franchitti, Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell encountered gearbox trouble early in the race.
