Like the Peugeot 908, the ARX.01 was born in 2007, and came to La Sarthe for the first time this year. Further to its multiple wins in the American Le Mans Series, the question was to know if the HPD could make it 24 Hours long. And the answer was yes!
The two cars manufactured by Honda’s American importer received the chequered flag, and the big surprise was Strakka Racing’s win. The British team made no mistakes at a very fast pace. They were the first to complete 5,000kms in the history of the LMP2 category, finishing 5th overall in the wake of the first petrol engine LMP1, while the Highcroft car suffered cooling problems and lost the runner-up spot.
Honda came and won for its first Le Mans start… and will be back. Right after the ACO press conference presenting the guidelines of the forthcoming technical regulations, HPD unveiled a new engine eligible for the 2011 LMP2 class.
