Krohn and Jönsson (Ferrari): Record Breaking Teammates

Tracy Krohn and Nic Jönsson enter their 12th 24 Hours of Le Mans together!

Nic Jönsson and Tracy Krohn’s history as teammates is longer than most drivers’ history at Le Mans. This year marks the pair’s 12th 24 Hours of Le Mans together.

It’s impossible to think of Krohn Racing without thinking of Jönsson and Krohn behind the steering wheel. It’s also impossible to think of Krohn Racing without the team’s signature neon green coloring coming to mind. This year, that green is emblazoned across the No. 83 Ferrari 488 GTE that the duo will share with Andrea Bertolini.

“It’s amazing to be back for my 12th year in-a-row with the same teammate,” Jönsson said. “For me, it’s a blessing to have had such a long career with Tracy. We’ve been together for 14 years total now. There’s not many people that stay together that long. To be able to come to this great motorsports spectacle of the world every year together is absolutely fantastic. To have guys like Andrea Bertolini join us this year, someone who raced with us in 2011 and 2012 in the Ferrari in WEC… we know each other very well. His experience in the new 488 will give us a great edge.”

When asked what it takes to stay not just teammates, but friends for 14 years, Jönsson attributed it to trust.

“I think, hopefully, that I have lead him in the right direction with the different things we’ve done together,” Jönsson said. “We’ve had some success and we’ve had some rough years here at Le Mans. We’ve been on the podium three times before. We’ve won races in WEC and in the Daytona Prototype in the States. We’ve had a lot of success over the years. We’ve built trust. This is a dangerous sport and you have to have respect for what you do. I try to make sure we have a suitable car for what Tracy wants to do. That’s what it boils down to: that trust and the relationship. If we didn’t get along outside the racetrack, it’d be hard to stay together for 14 years.”

Racing together for over a decade has given Jönsson some keen insight into Krohn’s character. He reports that despite Krohn’s calm and polite demeanor, he is fiercely competitive.

“What a lot of people don’t know about Tracy is he played competitive golf back in the day and he also played racquetball at a very high level,” Jönsson said. “Obviously, being as successful in business as he is, it takes competitiveness to do that. He takes that into motorsports and that brings out the best in him when he gets in the car.”

Jönsson and Krohn know each other so well that Krohn jokingly calls Jönsson “my psychologist.”

With the help of Bertolini, the duo hopes to channel their camaraderie into their elusive first win.

“We come here every year with a desire to get on the top step of the podium and hopefully that will happen this year,” Krohn said. “We’ve been too close too many times. It’s time to win. We have a really good car and a really good team. We have the strength and experience of Andrea Bertolini and we’re also racing under DH Racing, our Chinese partners.”

After three podium finishes in a Ferrari at Le Mans, Krohn and Jönsson are definitely overdue for a win.
