The Porsche Penske Motorsport squad have burst to the top for the first time during the 24 Hours of Le Mans week with the #5 heading home a pair of chasing Cadillac’s. The German outfit turning on the pace ahead of the Hyperpole session later this evening.

<p>The final Free Practice session in the daylight - can you believe we are at that time in the week already! Rain downpours this morning in the Le Mans area evaporated as quickly as it came, the 62 cars in the early segment of Free Practice 3 helped lay down some of the rubber washed away with the rain that morning.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Hypercar</h2>

<p>2023 centenary event winners, the #51 Ferrari AF Corse outfit set the early benchmark in the first hour - with Antonio Giovinazzi becoming the first driver under the 03:25 mark on his second flying lap, as the track showed signs of coming to life early - only six tenths off the Free Practice 1 best 24 hours earlier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the final 35 minutes the #5 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 with Mathieu Jaminet at the controls showed the track was ready for some quick times ahead of Hyperpole - going almost a second quicker than Giovinazzi&rsquo;s time with a 03:24.717.</p>

<p>Will Stevens in the #12 Hertz Team JOTA Cadillac followed suit slotted into second with five minutes left of FP3 before teammate Earl Bamber leapfrogged the #12 with the #38 sister. Cadillac showing last nights qualifying marker was no flash in the pan Fourth would be bestowed to the #51 Ferrari AF Corse team, as the ever present yellow #83 AF Corse Ferrari completed the top five.</p>

<h2>Finding the limits&hellip;</h2>

<p>The first incident came in the first hour. A Slow Zone at the&nbsp;final corner was thrown as Thomas Flohr was hustling the #54 Vista AF Corse Ferrari 296 over the curbs at the Ford chicane in search of bettering his time, but took too curb at Raccordement - the final corner and dropped the LMGT3 car into the gravel trap. Fast work by the rescue team and marshals got the stricken Ferrari back on the road for the session to continue.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>After briefly crossing into the second hour, Jonas Ried in the #9 Iron Lynx ORECA LMP2 - missed his braking point and locked up heading into Indianapolis corner - heading straight on into the tyre barrier. The incident brought out a Slow Zone in that sector for the rescue mission to begin. Within a matter of minutes, the LMP2 car was grabbed and placed back on all four wheels. Limping the #9 machine back to the pitlane - it was apparent the tracking and steering had been knocked out of alignment.</p>

<p>Celia Martin in the #83 Iron Dames Porsche 911 GT3 R LMGT3 got broadside on the exit of the Daytona chicane, carrying too much speed. Bearing down and closing fast was the #37 CLX - Pure Racing LMP2 car, which darted out of the path of the Porsche, but went headfirst into the barriers in the process. Simultaneously, the #183 AF Corse ORECA went off-roading - riding through the gravel trap and safely through the other side at the Porsche Curves. Both incidents warranted a Red Flag to help give the marshals time to sweep up the debris and repair the tyre barriers.</p>

<p>In the final hour, the #93 Peugeot 9X8 was seen crawling back to the pits with a nervous Peugeot TotalEnergies crew looking on. On its return to the pits, the car was fired into the air and spun into the garage and panels quickly pulled off for the mechanics to get to work and solve the problem.</p>

<p>Toyota on the other hand were very industrious this afternoon - with the #8 entry achieving the most amount of laps with 45 in total. That equates to 613km under the belts in one three-hour sitting!&nbsp;</p>

<h2>LMP2</h2>

<p>In the prototype class, the #29 TDS Racing ORECA set the pace with Rodrigo Sales at the helm - taking the FP3 crown from the #23 United Autosports version of the ORECA late in the three-hour session. Inter Europol Competition are always competitive in the one-make formula, and they placed their #43 representative in third ahead of the #22 United Autosports car with &lsquo;Spike&rsquo; aka the AO by TF LMP2 in fifth.</p>

<p>The #28 IDEC Sport team had a heart-racing moment in the final 12 minutes when one of the wheels sheared off the ORECA and rolled into the gravel trap, throwing a late Slow Zone. Luckily - Job Van Uitert didn&rsquo;t have far to get the car back for the team to debrief over the three-wheeled wagon.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2>LMGT3</h2>

<p>United Autosports were in line for a double at one point in the session with representation at the top in both LMP2 and LMGT3. The McLaren 720S LMGT3 Evo run by United Autosports, which carries the iconic #59 which was worn by its McLaren F1 ancestor to its 1995 win could only manage sixth at the flag. Taking the honour of top GT was the #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin - stealing the top spot in a smash and grab raid on the last lap. The #92 Manthey 1ST Phorm Porsche team, who were on top for so long had to settle for second with Richard Lietz pipping the so far dominant #78 Akkodis ASP Lexus team. Racing Spirit of Leman showed Aston Martins wirth with fourth ahead of the #46 Team WRT BMW.<br />

The #63 Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG which spent all night in the garage being rebuilt surfaced in FP3 with the team in silver shaking down the front engined monster to begin with before chalking up 30 laps LMGT3 machine.&nbsp;</p>

Porsche opens Le Mans account with fastest in FP3 ahead of Cadillac and Ferrari

Hypercars under the microscope | Eight illustrious manufacturers will line up in the top class at the 93rd 24 Hours of Le Mans (11-15 June 2025). They include Porsche – the most successful of them all in the history of this iconic race with 19 outright wins. From the 917 in 1970 to the 919 Hybrid that last took the honours in 2017, the German carmaker has always created cars best adapted to the rules and demands of the time to come out on top. Can the 963 follow suit?

<p>In December 2020,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/porsche-announces-return-to-top-class-of-endurance-racing-from-2023-54674">Porsche announced its intention to return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans</a>. After taking time to study the rulebook and analyse its possibilities, the manufacturer took the plunge once the Automobile Club de l&rsquo;Ouest (ACO) and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship thrashed out a historic technical arrangement. <strong>The two race organisers found sufficient common ground to allow Hypercars to compete at both the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in the biggest endurance races on the other side of the Atlantic, such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.</strong></p>

<p>This &ldquo;simplification&rdquo; &ndash; which in fact masks a mammoth amount of work in the background to harmonise rules and give the competitors a common framework &ndash; spurred Porsche to create the 963 and conquer the world of endurance once again.</p>

<h2>In the tracks of the 962</h2>

<p><strong>So why &ldquo;963&rdquo;?</strong> In choosing this number for its new Hypercar, Porsche&rsquo;s intention was clearly <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-mans-porsches-legacy-carries-on-with-the-963-56496">to pick up the legacy of the 962</a>, the Group C prototype that made its d&eacute;but at the 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans before delivering victory in 1986 and 1987, each time with Derek Bell, Al Holbert and Hans-Joachim Stuck sharing the driving duties. Entered as a GT in 1994, the Dauer-Porsche 962 LM stole the show with Mauro Baldi, Yannick Dalmas and Hurley Haywood, closing a ten-year sequence in the best possible way.</p>

<p><strong>The 962 encountered worldwide success from Suzuka to Monza, and from Silverstone to Riverside. The inspiration for the 963 lies right there.&nbsp;</strong>The 962 owed much of that success to the works outfit &ndash; backed at the time by Joest Racing &ndash; and private teams.</p>

<p>Like the 962, today&rsquo;s Hypercar competes in IMSA and the WEC, with the same team behind the operations: Penske. Like the 962, the 963 has also been chosen by privateers: JDC Miller MotorSports in IMSA and Proton Competition for the 93rd 24 Hours of Le Mans.</p>

<p>The 963 is also in the process of emulating the 962&rsquo;s track record. Back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona (2024 and 2025),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/fr/actualites/la-porsche-963-ajoute-une-nouvelle-course-legendaire-a-son-palmares-59419">a triumph at Sebring</a> (2025) and a total of 14 wins across all championships. <strong>No prizes for guessing which one is missing.</strong></p>

<h2>An engine with a Le Mans heritage</h2>

<p>Porsche has garnered a reputation for designing exclusive, emblematic power units. The brand was the first to deploy a turbocharged engine in 1974, and the first to run with a flat-six, eight or twelve (in 1965, 1963 and 1969 respectively). The latest epic era with the 919 Hybrid began with a V4 &ndash; an engine architecture never previously seen at Le Mans. The result was three wins.</p>

<p><strong>For the 963, however, the engineers have erred on the side of caution with a trusty V8 </strong>&ndash; the engine used in the RS Spyder (2008 and 2009). Under the code name 9RD, it also found its way under the hood of a road car, the Porsche 918 Spyder, with an increase in cubic capacity from 3.4 to 4.6 litres.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No turbocharger was used on the RS Spyder in the late 2000s or on the 918 that appeared in 2013. Is that an issue? No. This engine block was optimised to offer flexibility and designed to accommodate turbochargers if necessary, and especially a hybrid system.&nbsp;Eighty percent of all its components thus originate from the 918. <em>&ldquo;The engine features a flat crankshaft and has a very short stroke,&rdquo; </em>explains Stefan Moser.&nbsp;<em>&ldquo;This allowed us to mount it very low, which gives us a low centre of gravity and optimum linkage points for the suspension and gearbox.&rdquo;</em> <strong>These elements transmit power more directly and efficiently, and ultimately reduce roll and boost the Hypercar&rsquo;s stability.</strong></p>

<p><br />
Lubricated by Mobil 1, the water-cooled engine runs on a fuel developed by TotalEnergies &ndash; Excellium Racing 100 &ndash; produced from waste and residues from the winemaking process. This is more than a simple transplant. The engine has been broadly improved with a &ldquo;hot-vee&rdquo; layout. This means the two turbochargers are placed between the cylinder banks. The fresh air and gas streams are guided accordingly.</p>

<p>This arrangement has several benefits:</p>

<ul>
	<li>A compact layout &ndash; placing the turbos in the centre frees up space on the sides</li>
	<li>An aerodynamic advantage &ndash; the engine fits more comfortably within the streamlined body</li>
	<li>Optimum cooling &ndash; hot gases are better contained in the centre</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>The choice of a V8 for the 963 is therefore the result of a rational approach harnessing technical heritage, regulatory restrictions, optimised integration &ndash; and also controlled development costs.</strong></p>

<h2>A winning combination?</h2>

<p>A tried and tested engine, and a name that harks back to a rich past. Continuity is also the watchword for the chassis. Multimatic, the successful chassis manufacturer notably involved in the Ford GT programme, was selected from the four accredited makes. Porsche had already worked with Multimatic on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/porsche-toasts-the-new-record-set-by-the-919-hybrid-evo-at-the-nuerburgring-video-49817">919 Hybrid Evo</a>, an unrestricted version of which shattered the Nordschleife lap record. At the time, the Canadian company specialised in supplying suspension components and had invented and patented the spool valve damping technology used in Multimatic DSSV shock absorbers.&nbsp;They were fitted to the 911 RSR GTE as well as to current Porsche Cup models.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>With the rational choices made, based on the substantial expertise accumulated at the venue over the years (Porsche has been ever-present since 1951 with a total of <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-mans-porsches-19-wins-with-six-legendary-cars-54677">19 outright wins</a>), the 963 would appear to have one sole aim this season: Le Mans. Is a 20th win on the cards?</strong></p>

The Porsche 963 under the microscope: built for win 20

Eduardo Freitas has officiated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as Race Director since 2012. He explains the whys and wherefores of one of the lynchpins of the race regulations.

<p>&quot;Well, everything has to have a beginning and an end. Under the FIA&rsquo;s code of driving, cars should be contained between the two white lines,&rdquo; states Eduardo Freitas, making the boundaries clear from the outset. &quot;A driver is free to develop her or his own style and technique, within those limits. Abusing a track limit is gaining a sporting advantage, otherwise drivers wouldn&#39;t do it. If it&#39;s a mistake it&#39;s a mistake, but in certain places, the way that they do it, you can clearly see it&#39;s not a mistake. However, from where we stand, they are treated as mistakes because if we treated them all as track limits, we would have to report all of them to the stewards.&quot;</p>

<h2>A safety issue</h2>

<p>Freitas explains: &ldquo;Coming back to the white lines: we do simulate speeds of the cars on track. So, if you allow a car to start cutting on the inside of a turn and going wide on the exit of a turn, the speed will obviously be faster. Then we calculate runoffs. And in the runoffs, you will see tyre barriers, high speed barriers, and so on. The idea is to dissipate energy [to slow the car] if things go wrong. On one hand we&#39;re trying to create runoffs long enough to accommodate a car that loses control, but if we then allow cars to go faster than we accounted for, by cutting corners, then we have a safety issue.&rdquo; The Race Director adds that the calculations include a margin for error.</p>

<h2>Rebellion quashed</h2>

<p>&quot;There was a mutiny a few years ago here in Le Mans. I found out which driver, a GT driver, was the leader. I believe in discussion, so I called the driver to my office. I said, listen, do you know why we monitor track limits? and he replied that it was a pain, so I asked again. Do you know why we do it? &lsquo;Yeah, it&#39;s because of the lines.&rsquo; I said, it&rsquo;s not just that. Here, this is a simulation of a GT car on this circuit. We know that the GT will be doing this racing line, if he loses control here, he will be at this speed, correct? Yeah. What happens if he cuts here and I let him go wide there, he&#39;ll be faster, but look at his impact. Energy. If I allow him to go faster, his impact will be bigger, correct? There was a moment of silence and then &lsquo;Ah. We didn&#39;t know that.&rsquo; Once he understood why we monitor track limits, he totally changed his attitude.&quot;</p>

<h2>Monitoring</h2>

<p>So how does the Race Director monitor track limits? &quot;There are several ways. We have judges of fact, which is a role given to some of the marshals stationed all around the track. Each time a car crosses the line, they note, with pencil and paper, the number and time of day and report it to race control. Another method is by GPS, which is less reliable. We use a combination of GPS and camera in our track limit analysis system. With the camera, we can immediately identify the car and wipe the time for that lap.&quot;</p>

<h2>The particularities of Le Mans</h2>

<p>The Dunlop Chicane is a sticking point. &ldquo;Since we did away with tyre warmers, there&rsquo;s a tendency to cut the right-hand corner.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s hard not to make mistakes with cold tyres. But the Race Director could see it wasn&rsquo;t always a mistake. We gave ourselves a year to find the solution. We came up with GPS geo fencing. We take a close look every time we see that someone has gone wide.&quot;</p>

<p>Alterations have been made to the end of the last chicane on the left. K&eacute;vin Estre&rsquo;s 2024 pole position was the subject of debate because the Porsche driver had brushed the boundaries at that spot. &quot;The car was on track, but to be able to ascertain that the car was on the track, you need to zoom in, you need to expand, compensate the pixelization of the image.&quot; Freitas took the issue to the ACO. &ldquo;Between the white line and the edge of the asphalt, you can clearly fit a car.&quot; So, they decided to put the white line behind the kerb. It was not so for Test Day, but will be repainted today, assures Freitas. &quot;Would I do the same in Tertre Rouge, for example? No, it&#39;s totally out of the question. At Tertre Rouge, we have a different solution to make it dissuasive to go out. At Tertre Rouge and Karting, it&#39;s not just a matter of moving a line. You need to keep the line where it is and create a deterrent because they are fast corners. Very fast corners. For the runoffs we don&#39;t have a lot of margin to play with. So we need other deterrents. Gravel strips do a magnificent job of that.&quot;</p>

<h2>Penalties</h2>

<p>Race control detects offences. We report them to another body, the stewards, who decide on the penalty. They take time to refer to the rulebook and look at the driver&rsquo;s record. How many times has she or he done this during the season? A &ldquo;regular customer&rdquo; will face a stiffer penalty. During Free Practice all infringement penalties are cancelled. However, extra penalties can be added for repeated infringements. For example, on Test Day, if a driver carries on after the black/white flag (4th track limit infringement) he or she will be handed a 5-minute stop and go. In the race, drivers have 10 credits. On the 11th they get a warning, and at 12, they are reported to the stewards. From experience, the Race Director knows that drivers will use up all their credits. The aim is to cut corners, but avoid penalties.</p>

<h2>24 Hours of Le Mans | Free Practice</h2>

<p>Four additional&nbsp;hours of track time across&nbsp;two sessions&nbsp;are in store this afternoon for 24 Hours entrants. This is their final opportunity&nbsp;to finesse settings ahead of the big race. Drivers take&nbsp;turns doing&nbsp;laps to&nbsp;become&nbsp;intimately acquainted with this&nbsp;notoriously demanding circuit. Two sessions are scheduled: the first from 14:45&nbsp;to 17:45 and&nbsp;the second at night from 23:00&nbsp;to midnight.</p>

<h2>24 Hours of Le Mans | Hyperpole&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Two Hyperpole sessions (H1 and&nbsp;H2) are scheduled for today in its new format. In&nbsp;H1, the&nbsp;24 cars that qualified the day before in&nbsp;LMP2 and&nbsp;LMGT3 (2 x 12) battle it out for&nbsp;20 minutes to secure a spot in the top 8 and permission to take&nbsp;part in H2.&nbsp;This elimination format is&nbsp;then be repeated by the&nbsp;Hypercars&nbsp;with the top 15 prototypes competing in H1 to determine the 10 finalists. In H2, qualifiers have 15 minutes to put the pedal to the metal and earn&nbsp;the best possible starting grid position. Hyperpole is scheduled between&nbsp;20:00 and&nbsp;21:55.</p>

<p>The Hyperpole is brought to a close with&nbsp;an unforgettable ceremony.&nbsp;The drivers who have distinguished themselves are invited to take&nbsp;the podium, accompanied by their team manager, at 22:05. A Hyperpole trophy is&nbsp;presented&nbsp;to reward their performance&nbsp;and&nbsp;determination&nbsp;to clinch&nbsp;the pole.</p>

<h2>Road To Le Mans</h2>

<p>Road to Le Mans competitors&nbsp;hit the track today in a race against the clock for two qualifying sessions from&nbsp;11:45 to&nbsp;12:05 and&nbsp;12:20 to&nbsp;12:40. Then, they line up for the first 55-minute race starting at 18:25.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Porsche Sprint Challenge</h2>

<p>After Qualifying 1 (09:00 to 09:20) and&nbsp;2 (09:35 to 09:55), drivers face off in Race 1 starting at 13:10. Don&#39;t miss seeing&nbsp;71 Porsches snaking through the&nbsp;Dunlop chicane and hurtling down the Mulsanne Straight!</p>

<h2>Ford Mustang Challenge</h2>

<p>This American one-make championship is always a favourite at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans – Thursday 12 June programme

<p style="text-align: justify;">To Manzon, the 24 Hours of Le Mans evokes &ldquo;only good memories&rdquo;. He was privileged enough to have shared a car with some of the greatest French champions of that time, namely Jean Behra, Louis Chiron, Louis Rosier, Maurice Trintignant and Jean Guichet. The last three won the 24 Hours: Rosier in 1950, Trintignant and Guichet in 1954.</p>

<p>At Manzon&rsquo;s side in the video is G&eacute;rard Larrousse, himself a winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1973 and 1974.</p>

<p>The 83rd Le Mans 24 Hours will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2015.</p>
