2014 supplementary regulations
At the same time as the list of invitations for the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours was announced, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest published the supplementary regulations of the event, which can be consulted on line. They contain three important additions, all of which deal with safety.
-
As is the case every year, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has begun work on improving safety at the Le Mans 24-Hours circuit, in particular in the Tertre Rouge and Corvette corners, in collaboration with the regulatory Sports Federations.
-
A training course on a simulator lasting half-a-day will be obligatory for all drivers who have never raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours, or who haven’t taken part in the event for five years (all races since 2009), or more. It will be run in Le Mans on equipment agreed by the ACO, and will enable drivers to understand the specific race conditions of the event, and help them to memorise the different zones in which there are flags and lights.
-
A slow zone procedure will be introduced to reduce the impact of the safety cars on the track. The principle is as follows: in case of an incident necessitating the intervention of the marshals, technical and medical services, only a section of the circuit will be neutralised. In this zone cars can neither overtake nor exceed 60 km/h: outside this zone the race can continue as normal. If necessary, this slow zone may be preceded by a short neutralisation period with the safety cars covering the whole circuit.
All these modifications will be described in more detail on 13th February 2014.
