Born in 1969, March is the acronym of the four founding members : Max Mosley (who later became FIA president), Alan Rees, Graham Coacker and Robin Herd. March built its early reputation in the 70s by commercialising single seaters destined for Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3. At the beginning of the 80s, Robin Herd, the sole remaining boss, left for American to take on CART and Indianapolis (open wheel) as well as IMSA (endurance), ancestor series of IndyCar and Tudor United SportsCar Championship. In addition to five consecutive wins at the Indy 500 from 1983 at 1987, March found an important ally in IMSA with Al Hobert. Future three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1983-86-87), he was also responsible for Porsche's activities in the United States. He decided to have a Porsche motor installed in a March 83G and took the IMSA title in 1983. An identical car wont the 1984 24 Hours of Daytona in the hands of South African drivers Sarel van der Merwe, Tony Martin and Graham Duxbury.

After a single entry in 1975, March returned to Le Mans in 1982, with two 82G chassis powered by 6 litre Chevrolet V8 engines in the IMSA GTP class. This return to La Sarthe ended in both cars retiring. It would be 1985 before the 84G from the Kreepy Krauly team, winners at Daytona the previous year, would finish the race, in 22nd place. March would see its best result at Le Mans in 1986: the March-Porsche 85G entered by the British Richard Cleare team (the car present on Nov. 5 for the Esprit Le Mans day) won the GTP class (Grand Touring Prototype), with a 14th overall finish. Also of note, that same year Al Holbert won the race overall, the man who had given March its first successes in American endurance racing.
