BMW took the opportunity during the Italian GT championship round at the Mugello circuit to offer Pierluigi Martini - one of the winning drivers at the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans with the German manufacturer - a customized version of a 200-car limited edition from DTM, the German touring car championship.
The keys to the Italian driver's car were handed over by the general manager and marketing director of BMW's Italian branch in tribute to the only Italian driver to have won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans while representing the Bavarian marque.
The "BMW Le Mans Winner Hommage" borrowed the livery of the BMW V12 LMR that won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999 (with also at the wheel Yannick Dalmas and Joachim Winkelhock) and was brought to the Mugello circuit for the occasion.
BMW will officially return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year, though this time an overall victory will not be in question given the Bavarian manufacturer will be entered in GT (see article).
