24 Hours of Le Mans - Dieter Schornstein (1940-2014)

A Porsche lover at heart, Dieter Schornstein passed away on December 19th. After coming to motorsports later in life, the German driver competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times, with a fifth place finale as his best standing.

First entered in DRM, the German touring car championship considered the predecessor to the current DTM, Dieter Schornstein also participated in the sports car World Championship from 1978 to 1980 in a Porsche 935.

His first participation in La Sarthe, in 1978, with the Porsche Kremer Racing team's Porsche 935/77A, along with Louis Krages, a.k.a. John Winter, and Philippe Gurdjian, himself recently deceased, ended in a retirement. The two following years, he entered the same car, but with different outfits: Sekurit Racing Team first of all with a seventh place finale, then Velga Racing Team with which he won a class victory.

The same outfit, same driver line-up (Harald Grohs and Götz von Tschirnhaus), but a slightly different car - a Porsche 935 J, in 1981. The trio almost clinched the Group 5 class win but had to settle for reaching the second step on the podium.

For his final participation in 1984, the driver originally from Aix-la-Chapelle entered a Porsche 956 with an outfit that eventually became very famous, Joest Racing, with NewMan as principal sponsor. He rejoined the teammate with whom he had debuted in La Sarthe, Louis "John Winter" Krages, who won in Le Mans the following year. The pair was joined by Volkert Merl and crossed the finish line in fifth place overall, Schornstein's best result.

He who was also the owner of a metalworks company retired from motorsports at the end of the 1984 season with a record that included a win at the 6 Hours of Silverstone in 1981, along with Harald Grohs and two-time World Rally Champion, Walter Rörhl.

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest extends its sincere condolences to his friends and family.
