GT in ILMC 8/8: Porsche 911, the everlasting.

The the silhouette of the 911 is a shape that embodies the image of Porsche to the point of entry into the collective memory.

What other manufacturer can boast such immediate identification, both road and tour for almost half a century?

The original Porsche 911 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show 1963. It's origins are in the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 356 which it succeeded as the next evolution of a concept dear to the founder Ferdinand Porsche, that of rear overhanging engine with air-cooling by a fan that makes the 911's sound so distinctive. Over time, the 2 litres 128 hp version of 1963 version rose to 530 hp for the 3.6-litre twin-turbo GT2 (2008), the 911 most powerful ever built. Meanwhile, it has known other important innovations, including among others, the turbo (1974), the four-wheel drive (1989), and water cooling (since 1998).

The first appearance of the 911 Le Mans 24 Hours in 1966 ended with a 14th place in the hands of Jacques Dewes and Jean Kerguen. Two other performances at La Sarthe that are worth noting: firstly, the second place Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller with the Carrera RSR in 1974, behind winners Henri Pescarolo and Gerard Larrousse in a Matra. Secondly; the victory of the 911 GT3 RSR of Team Felbermayr-Proton in LM GT2 in 2010, the 98th success of Porsche at Le Mans in all categories. Today, the 911 becomes 'green' in the shape of the GT3 R Hybrid. Entered without outside classification in the ILMC 2010, Petit Le Mans and 1000 km of Zhuhai, its performance has been impressive.

The future of the most famous Porsche is assured. Because the 911 is a bit like Cleopatra's nose: if this car had been another shape, the face of the automotive world would be changed, and the history of Porsche would never have been the same . So you can bet that the 911 will still be just as modern if Porsche celebrates its centenary!
