After 1981, on October 15, 1983, Nelson Piquet, Jr. became F1 World Champion for the second time in South Africa. The Brazilian driver repeated the feat in 1987 before trying his hand at endurance racing and competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1996 and 1997.

Twenty years after his father's first participation, Nelson Piquet, Jr. was at the start at Le Mans in 2016 in Rebellion Racing's #12 R-One. He finished 29th overall (sixth in the LM P1 class).
