Since the mid-sixties, Switzerland has been one of the leading nations in the history of endurance racing, of which Scuderia Filipinetti was a pioneer.

In 2012 Swiss successes included a victory at Le Mans and in the World Champion title (shared with André Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer) for Marcel Fässler, the trophy for the best LM P1 private team for Rebellion Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and the drivers' title European Le Mans Series for Mathias Beche. All are worthy heirs of Jo Siffert (1936-1971) and also Georges Filipinetti (1907-1973), founder of the team that bore his name.

Founded in 1962, the Scuderia Filipinetti was a major private team in the history of Ferrari at Le Mans, alongside the North American Racing Team of Luigi Chinetti, the Ecurie Francorchamps (Belgium) by Jacques Swaters and team Maranello Concessionaires (Great Britain) of Ronnie Hoare. The Ferrari 275 GTB pictured above finished eleventh in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967, with Swiss duo Dieter Spoerry and Rico Steinemann before his career with Porsche. Rico Steinemann (1939-2003) finished second in a 907 in La Sarthe in 1968, before succeeding Huschke von Hanstein as head of the racing department of the German marque, then become responsible for public relations.

Scuderia Filipinetti scored their best result at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972 with the seventh place of the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (the famous "Daytona") driven by Michael Parkes, Jean-Louis Lafosse and Jean-Jacques Cochet . Although Scuderia Filipinetti did not survive its creator, who died aged only 40, it is associated with the big names in the history of Swiss endurance racing, such as Jo Siffert and Herbert Müller, and to affirm the special standing of the country that has the world's largest proportion of registered Ferrari owners per head of population.
