The Automobile Club de l’Ouest pays tribute to the memory of Dick Barbour

It is with great sadness that the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has learned of the death of Dick Barbour, former racing driver and team owner.

Dick’s first time at the 24 Hours of Le Mans was at the wheel of the Porsche 935 he shared with Brian Redman and John Paul Jr. The team won the IMSA class and was classed fifth overall. In 1979, he returned to La Sarthe with the same car, teamed with Rolf Stommelen and the American actor Paul Newman. That year the #70 Porsche 935 topped the IMSA tables again and was second overall. The following year, Dick took part in his last 24 Hours of Le Mans as a driver, and claimed the IMSA class win once more.

In 2000, his team Dick Barbour Racing fielded a Porsche 911 GT3 R in LMGT3 which he entrusted to Lucas Luhr, Bob Wollek and Dirk Müller. A year later, the team moved up to LMP675 (equivalent to today’s LMP2), entering two Reynard 01Qs, one of them driven by Venezuelan Milka Duno. The sister car finished fifth in class in the hands of Didier De Radrigues, Sascha Maasen and Hideshi Matsuda.

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest extends its sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones.
