LM GTE Am at Le Mans 2012-2016 (2) - Champions, exploits and other firsts

The 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans press conference will be held on Thursday 2 February. In the meantime, let’s look back at the winners in the LM GTE Am class since the World Endurance Championship was introduced in 2012.

- Only five winners in LM GTE Am at the 24 Hours of Le Mans have won the FIA Trophy for the class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC): Kristian Poulsen and David Heinemeier-Hansson (Aston Martin) in 2014, as well as Viktor Shaytar, Aleksey Basov and Andrea Bertolini (SMP Racing) in 2015. Winner in 2012 with Patrick Bornhauser, Julien Canal and Pedro Lamy, that year French team Larbre Compétition also won the FIA Trophy in the World Championship, but the Drivers Trophy wasn't awarded until 2013.

- Two other teams won the LM GTE Am class both at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship (WEC): Aston Martin Racing and SMP Racing (2015).

- Four years after his first participation in a Ferrari F430, gentleman-driver and actor Patrick Dempsey chose the LM GTE Am class for his return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, at the wheel of a Porsche 911 entered by his own team. Since then, he has never failed to reach the top 5 in the class. After a fourth place finish in 2013 then fifth in 2014, he claimed the second step on the LM GTE Am podium in 2015, with teammates Patrick Long and Marco Seefried. That year, he even won in the class at the 6 Hours of Fuji, the sixth of eight rounds of the 2015 World Endurance Championship (WEC).

- Also in 2015, the Russian national anthem was played for the first time during the podium ceremony at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, thanks to the win for SMP Racing's Ferrari 458 Italia. On the attack throughout the season, the team was heading toward a well-deserved second place finish when that turned into victory 45 minutes from the checkered flag after the Aston Martin leader in the class had an incident. This success at Le Mans marked the beginning of a string of three consecutive wins for SMP Racing, who went on to win the World Championship LM GTE Am Teams and Drivers Trophies.

- Originating in American endurance racing, the Scuderia Corsa team has claimed an LM GTE Am podium finish at both its participations in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After an impressive debut crystallized by third place in 2015, Bill Sweedler, Jeff Seagal and Townsend Bell won in 2016.
