Manor at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: when spectators play meterologists

This past April, the Manor outfit - entered in LM P2 in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) - launched an innovative app to allow fans to inform the team in real time about weather conditions. Very precious information to have when rain invites itself to a 13.629 km circuit...

Though the Manor outfit possesses an impressive record in single-seaters promotional formulas, it is starting out in endurance this year. Present with a highly classic Oreca 05-Nissan on the track, the British team is taking an innovative approach to its fans.

The first step in a global interaction system with the public, the app launched by the team includes a "track-watch" function. Logged-in users around a circuit are able to alert as to weather changes by clicking on one of four symbols: sun, light rain, heavy rain, very heavy rain. The information, as well as the location of the user, are sent to the team in real time.

When it devised this function, Manor probably didn't realize exactly how useful it would be at the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Yes, most of the race took place in dry conditions, but the rain disrupted the first two hours as Manor's #44 Oreca was regularly in the lead of the LM P2 class.

Thanks to info provided by fans, to whom Manor will be giving a T-shirt in appreciation, the team was very precisely aware of track conditions, but it wasn't enough and the team had to throw in the towel: mechanical problems early in the evening on Saturday greatly slowed the car before an incident shortly before noon on Sunday definitively ended any hope of reaching the checkered flag.

Starting on July 24th at the 6 Hours of Nürburgring, fourth round of the 2016 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, Manor - who entered just one car at Le Mans because the entry request for the second car was submitted too late - will have both its cars.
