Toni Vilander (WeatherTech Racing): “I’m very confident”

American team WeatherTech Racing took first place in LMGTE Am on Test Day, with a fastest lap of 03:56.862. Toni Vilander, WeatherTech Racing #62 Ferrari 488 GTE gave his impressions of the day.

You won LMGTE Pro in 2012 and ’14 so you’re used to being first at Le Mans, aren’t you?

“Yes, that’s true! [laughs] It’s good to be here. I have a good feeling about this car. Our team comes from the USA so it’s a big effort to come here. I’m proud to be part of this team. Sometimes there’s pressure on you, or issues with the car, but today the car ran smoothly and we’re not very far from where we want to be. I’m very confident.”

This is your first time in LMGTE Am...

“It’s a first for all of us with this car on this circuit. We’ve got a whole LMGTE Am campaign to complete. It’s a different approach. Today, it was important to see how the car performed. Also, as drivers, we’ll analyse our lap times to see where we can improve for the race."

"I’m glad of my co-drivers’ advice. It’s a team effort. Each driver has to keep up the pace and to be able to trust the car."

Is it an advantage to have a new car to start with?

"It was important to see what it can do. Today was a great help. We got off to a good start this morning. It felt good from the outset. I think I was the most confident member of the crew. We achieved pretty much what we set out to do. It’s my first time in LMGTE Am so I have to get used to it. It’s different, and I’m glad of my co-drivers’ advice. Each driver has to keep up the pace and to be able to trust the car. We might have expected more issues coming here with a new car, but today went very well. I congratulated the guys who built it."

What about traffic management?

"You have to look in the mirrors a lot. But you can see the faster cars closing in. With the LMP1s it’s easy, they just glide past. With some of the less experienced drivers in LMP2 it can be more difficult to manage."
