2022 24 Hours of Le Mans – #7 Toyota heads the list of Hyperpole qualifiers

The competitors at the 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans returned to the track for a 60-minute session with the top 6 in each class qualifying for Hyperpole. Two cars that suffered damage in free practice earlier sat out the session.

While all five Hypercars will automatically qualify for Thursday's Hyperpole, six Hyperpole places were up for grabs in the other classes in the qualifying session which got underway at 19:00 local time. An unfortunate rain shower brought the serious stuff to a premature end.

Reshad de Gerus at the wheel of the #30 Oreca 07-Gibson of Duqueine Team was first out on to the track for the one-hour qualifying session.

Following the first free practice session, two LMP2 prototypes did not take to the track for qualifying: the #10 Oreca 07-Gibson of Vector Sport due to engine failure and the #45 Oreca 07-Gibson of Algarve Pro Racing as a result of damage caused when Steven Thomas went off at the newly named Raccordement Motul.

Three near-simultaneous incidents at the mid-session point brought the session to a halt for a shade over 10 minutes. Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender in the #93 Porsche of Proton Competition went off at the first chicane on the Mulsanne Straight, Nicolas Varrone in the #75 Iron Lynx at Indianopolis and finally Brendon Hartley, the fastest in FP1, headed into the gravel at Mulsanne Corner.

Rain began to fall shortly after the restart that put paid to the chances of those who had not made an ideal start to the session.

In the Hypercar class, the fastest qualifier was the #7 Toyota GR010-Hybrid of Toyota Gazoo Racing in 3:27.247, followed by the two Glickenhaus 007 LMHs and the Alpine A480-Gibson.

Last year’s Le Mans-winning Team WRT’s #31 Oreca 07-Gibson was fastest in LMP2 with Robin Frijns clocking a time of 3:29.898. JOTA’s #38 Oreca 07-Gibson was second fastest.

The #92 Porsche 911 RSR-19 of Porsche GT Team topped LMGTE Pro timesheet, a thousandth of a second under the 3:51 mark. The #63 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R edged out the #91 Porsche for second place in class.

The LMGTE Am class saw the #98  Aston Martin Vantage AMR of Northwest AMR go around fastest in 3:52.599.  The all-female Iron Dames line-up qualified for Hyperpole in fourth place.
