Dumas reaches new heights a week after Le Mans

Within a week, Porsche works driver Romain Dumas has won two of the world’s oldest motor races -- the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Pikes Peak international hill climb -- both for the second time.

At Pikes Peak the RD Limited Norma started in pole position, but unlike at Le Mans, in the American race to the clouds he was the only driver and couldn’t count on teammate Neel Jani to take the wheel for the start.

Dumas holds the record for the longest distance covered at Le Mans, which he set with fellow Audi R15 crew members Mike Rockenfeller and Timo Bernhard in 2010. He and his Porsche teammates did not better that this year. However, in Colorado, Dumas set a new personal best, improving his 2014 time by 14 seconds, completing the race in 08:51.446.

The Frenchman should be pleased with a 6-second lead over staunch favourite Rhys Millen, especially as his test day was interrupted due to engine failure which prevented him from reaching the highest part of the course. He lined up at the start without having been able to check that the Norma’s new engine was correctly set up.

The 1994 winner of the ACO ELF trophy drew on his experience to pull off this win. Dumas has won Le Mans, Spa and Pikes Peak twice each and the 12 Hours of Sebring once. His trophy cabinet is missing the 24 Hours of Daytona and a WEC title. The latter could be his this year.
