John Andretti has passed away

John Andretti, the nephew of Mario Andretti, died today at the age of 56 years following a long battle with cancer. He was an accomplished driver in the U.S., competing in the Champ Car Series and NASCAR, participating in the Indianapolis 500 and winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona. He took the start in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988.

On 11-12 June 1988, a family driver line-up impressed everyone at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the #19 Porsche 962C figured the Andretti trio composed of Mario (father), Michael (son) and John (nephew). They finished sixth overall at that 56th running of the race. Though slightly less well-known globally than his uncle and cousin, John led a distinguished career in the U.S. and even won the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1989.

Having long suffered with cancer, John Andretti lost his battle on 30 January 2020. The Automobile Club de l'Ouest wishes like to extend its sincerest condolences to his famiy and loved ones.
