Lewis Williamson is the latest driver to have switched from single seaters to sportscars. After being somewhat out of the limelight since the 2013 GP3 season with Bamboo Engineering, the Dundee-born driver has made the move to endurance.

Williamson has appeared for Strakka Racing in the Renault Sport Trophy and Renault Sport Endurance Trophy since the beginning of the 2016 season, and is now ready to move up a gear. After taking the wheel of Strakka Racing’s Gibson 015S at the rookie test in Bahrain at the end of last season, Williamson will be making his WEC début in the upcoming Nürburgring round of the championship. “No doubt, this is an immense opportunity for me,” he said. “Strakka has given me a chance very few drivers get and I intend to make the very most of it. I’ve done well in the past at the Nürburgring, and the Gibson was the fastest car on last year’s test day so I reckon we should in the mix. The weather always plays its part at the Nürburgring and whilst it was hot last year, I know it could also be foggy and raining. You just don’t know.”

Williamson will take the seat of Danny Watts, who will remain part of the Strakka squad for the rest of the season. Co-drivers Jonny Kane and Nick Leventis will undoubtedly “coach” the young Scotsman who will be monitored with interest.
