More than 10 million dollars for the Porsche that won at Le Mans in 1983!

A little more than two months after having beaten its own record of 17 wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche established a new record, but this time the German manufacturer had little to do with it except to have designed a winning car that became a legend for all those nostalgic for Group C.

The Porsche 956 dating back to 1982, but winner at the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans, was one of the stars of the Gooding company's auction at Pebble Beach in California which brings together vintage cars and their fans, and is considered one of the three biggest sales in the U.S. along with Scottsdale, Arizona and Amelia Island, Florida.

Despite an estimation between seven and nine million dollars, the auction exceeded all expectations with a final bid of more than 10 million dollars, $10,120,000 to be exact, eclipsing the record set by a 1972 Porsche 917 sold at Pebble Beach three years ago.

This was never a forgone conclusion though since the first attempt to make the sale failed and the No. 956-004 chassis sold last year in Paris did not even go for more than 2,350,000 euros. The top step on the podium clinched in 1983 by the driver line-up Vern Schuppan-Hurley Haywood-Al Holbert thanks to the No. 956-003 chassis made the difference since the No. 956-004 chassis sold at Rétromobile did not let the trio Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert and Jürgen Barth reach higher than the third step on the podium in 1982.
