That year, Alpine made its return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans 35 years after its last win in La Sarthe, but 47 years after taking first place in the energy classification!
The 1966 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans proved to take its toll on the machines: only 15 of 55 entries crossed the finish line. Among them, four Alpines, one of which the No. 44 A210, driven by Cheinisse and de Lageneste, took first place in the energy classification as its creator Jean Rédélé looked on.
