1,201,000 yen for the Le Mans 24 hours 2011 start flag.

The auction by the Japanese Automobile Federation of the French flag used to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2011 was on the 28th of August. The flag with which Jean Todt, President of the FIA, started the race was sold 1,201,000 yen (about 11,000 euros).

Three hundred and ten bids were made at the auction held on the Internet from  22nd to 28th August. The profits will go to benefit victims of the disasters befell Japan after the earthquake on the 11th of March. It is a gesture of support for a nation that has long been a feature of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Twenty years ago a Japanese manufacturer won for the first time in La Sarthe: Mazda, with drivers Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert and Bertrand Gachot.

On the 11th June, this flag was used by Jean Todt, President of the International Automobile Federation, to start of the 79th Le Mans 24 Hours. Jean-Claude Plassart, President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, then gave it to representatives of the Japanese Automobile Federation who were present for the race. Complete with its box, pole and display stand, the French flag was also autographed by all the drivers who took part in the Le Mans 24 Hours 2011.
