1949 - Ferrari and Le Mans, a legend in the making

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest celebrates its 110th anniversary with a special commemorative stand at R

Visitors to the ACO stand are immediately drawn to the red livery and sober lines of the 166 MM that belie her sixty-seven years.

Rewind to 1949. Ferrari is a fledgling marque founded just two years earlier. The name, however, is familiar as Enzo Ferrari and his Scuderia had been Alfa Romeo’s official Grand Prix representatives during the interwar period. After an initial attempt as Auto Avio Costruzioni, Ferrari is at long last in a position to race cars under his own name. The 24 Hours of Le Mans are the first symbol of his success.

The 1949 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was a milestone in many respects. This seventeenth running of the race marked its rebirth after a decade-long hiatus due to World War II. It also saw the beginning of the Ferrari legend as Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon drove the 166 MM to victory on the marque’s début appearance. The 166 MM, still considered today to be one of the finest Ferraris ever designed, paved the way to eight more Ferrari triumphs by 1965. The legend of Le Mans played a major role in the Ferrari story during this 17-year period... and vice-versa.
