In the 90th anniversary year of the 24 hours of Le Mans, it will also (on the 16th of March) be the last 12 Hours of Sebring that includes LM P1 prototypes. It will be the scene of several announcements about the new series for 2014 which will replace the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
At Sebring, Ed Bennett and Scott Atherton, respectively directors of Grand Am and ALMS will unveil the new name, new logo and new classes of this new unified series, following the merger announced last autumn. At that time, a meeting was held between officials at Le Mans by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest and the World Endurance Championship FIA. Will there be Daytona Prototypes at Le Mans one day, which will be with the LM P2 prototypes major categories of this new series? The future will tell. But ALMS GT competitors regularly come to La Sarthe, such as Corvette Racing, Risi Competizione and Flying Lizard Motorsports. This year, Extreme Speed Motorsports, one of the most competitive Ferrari teams in the ALMS, will compete in its first 24 hours.
Since the creation of the American Le Mans Series in 1999, the 12 Hours of Sebring has opened the season in style, as well as being a major "dress rehearsal" for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This will be the last time that will the case this year for Audi and Rebellion Racing in LMP1, and also for Aston Martin Racing in GT. Sebring 2013 will also set a new milestone for the new shape of endurance racing, with the announcement of the new American series that will start in 2014, the birth of the Asian Le Mans Series and the new calendar of the European Le Mans Series. With the top of the pyramid being the 90th anniversary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the 22nd and 23rd June
