Two magnificent Aston Martins pose proudly on the tarmac, ready to do battle. They will soon be joined by the 58 other cars that will line up for the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans. The countdown has begun and tension has just cranked up a notch at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Imposing structures ready to welcome teams, sponsors and fans are springing up left, right and centre. The vast worksite took on a new dimension with the arrival of the first competitors in the small hours of Monday. A parade of trucks, packed to the brim with equipment mostly heading for the pits, the nerve centre of every Le Mans 24 Hours team, has ensued.
Mini-villages
The atmosphere is still relaxed at this stage, but there is an air of steely determination and concentration in the camp of the two main protagonists. Indeed, between the favourites, the race is already underway! The Toyota and Porsche garages are separated by around a dozen competitors and the space required to accommodate the two teams and all the baggage needed to ensure that a 24-hour race runs like clockwork is impressive. “We’re readying ourselves to live in a mini-village built from scratch in the heart of the paddock,” a member of the Japanese team said.
The stars have yet to make their appearance but, even before the cars’ engines start to roar, the pits are already a hive of activity as everyone works hard to be ready for the showdown, much to the delight of race organiser, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, and the many fans expected around the track this weekend.
