24 highlights of 2015 (7): Gibson's last hurrah

Renamed Gibson, the oldest chassis in the LM P2 class was once again at the top of its game in 2015, with four new wins and a new title.

In 2014, it was called Zytek. This year it was renamed Gibson...but the speed on the track is still there, in the form of two flagship teams: Greaves Motorsport and Jota Sport. The two outfits have in common having won with the British chassis - then called Zytek - at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (Greaves Motorsport in 2011, Jota Sport in 2014). Between them they have won three victories in the 2015 European Le Mans Series (ELMS).

Jota Sport still on point - Since the inception of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2012, every year Jota Sport has participated in the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the rehearsal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2015, the Gibson-Nissan won for the second time in the LM P2 class in the Belgian Ardennes, ahead of all the regular competitors in the class in the World Championship. At the 24 Hours, it could very well have clinched a second consecutive LM P2 win had it not been for an electrical problem incurred right after the start: it ended up passing under the checkered flag in second place, behind KCMG's winning Oreca 05, even clocking the best race lap in the class. Then the No. 38 Gibson resumed its duel in the ELMS with Greaves Motorsport, with a win at the 4 Hours of the Red Bull Ring.

A new title for Greaves Motorsport - There was another electrical problem in the sixth race hour that forced the No. 41 Gibson to retire. But the British team finally came out the winner in its three-party battle for the LM P2 title in the 2015 ELMS against Jota Sport and also Thiriet by TDS Racing's Oreca 05. With two victories (4 Hours of Silverstone then of Paul Ricard), Gary Hirsch, Björn Wirdheim and Jon Lancaster gave Greaves Motorsport its second double crown for drivers and teams, after the one in 2011 (at the time, the championship was called the Le Mans Series and still welcomed LM P1 prototypes).

For 2016, Jota Sport and Greaves Motorsport are looking to rise in the World Championship, and have announced the acquisition of an Oreca 05 and a Ligier JS P2, respectively. But the presence of the Gibson is not excluded from the double ELMS program. Let's hope for this green chassis a wonderful last stand in 2016, before the standardization of the LM P2 prototypes four-constructor market (Oreca, Ligier, Dallara and Riley Technologies) starting in 2017.
