24 Hours of Le Mans 1970-2015 - 45 Porsche stories (22)

For its 13th win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1994, Porsche used an unusual mix of prototypes and GTs.

Its history began in 1993, the German preparer Jochen Dauer presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show a version approved for the road of the 962 C, victorious at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1986 and 1987. Called the Dauer 962 Le Mans, it immediately attracted the attention of Porsche. The reintroduction at Le Mans of cars derived from road GTs starting in 1994 gave Porsche, Jochen Dauer and Reinhold Joest (who provided technical support) the opportunity to race at the 24 Hours in this class two units of the 962!

In the race, the Dauer Porsche 962 LM completed its mission with flying colours. Yannick Dalmas, Mauro Baldi and Hurley Haywood took definitive control two hours from the finish, while Thierry Boutsen-Danny Sullivan-Hans Joachim Stück finished third. Once again, Porsche upheld its reputation: the German manufacturer dared to come and conquer with a saavy mixture of technical know-how and opportunism. A conjuring trick that brought to mind the birth of the 917, the first Porsche to win at Le Mans, in 1970: 25 units were to be built for its approval in the "sport" class (5-liter maximum), thus circumventing the prototype limitation of three-liters.
