24 Hours of Le Mans 1977 - Roy Lichtenstein : the king of the Art Car (video)

Of all the Art Cars to have taken part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the BMW decorated by Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most emblematic. Perhaps it's because the beautiful car proudly carried the Bavarian manufacturer's colours, finishing ninth overall in the 1977 edition of the classic endurance race.

The American painter, one of the kings of Pop Art, much like Andy Warhol, who would create his own Art Car the following year, took on the challenge of symbolising speed by using curved lines. In the design, we also find Lichtenstein's trademark points of colour. Years later, the impression of speed would also be represented on the most recent BMW Art Car to date, decorated by Jeff Koons in 2010. Meanwhile, Costa's piece on the OAK Racing entry in 2013 consisted of road signs. Who will take on the challenge designing an Art Car for the next 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14-15, 2014?
