What has happened over the last two years?
Jonny Kane: Well we did do Le Mans in 2013 and obviously had a good result there, finishing sixth overall and won the privateers’ LM P1 class. The team took the decision that we should really concentrate on 2014 to decide what our plans were going to be. We decided P2 with a new chassis - the Dome - and to budget to prepare for what was a complete change of car. Unfortunately, when the car hit the track, we had a few problems and with the homologation rules, we just had to take the decision that we weren’t ready. We spent a lot of last year changing bits and pieces on the car to what we have as a package now. Hopefully we’re going to be in a good position to challenge for this season. It’s been a long year away - a year and a half really - so the team’s very much looking forward to getting started again, especially at Silverstone!
What was the real problem with the car?
JK: It was just lots of ‘new car’ things really. We had problems that stopped us from running a lot of laps in one go which meant you would go testing and wouldn’t really be able to do the work. One delay sort of led on to the next thing and to get different parts made is obviously a long lead time and, all of a sudden, you’ve lost quite a few months. I think we’re in a good position now though.
As a professional driver, how did you survive without competing for more than a year?
JK: Well I’ve been driving a long time. I think if I was just at the start of my career then it would be much more difficult. Yes, I've missed the competition, but I think that comes back pretty quickly. We’ve done quite a lot of testing over the last five or six months. We’ve done a lot of simulator work as well. So you keep yourself fit and ready to go!
What do you think of the LM P2 category for the 24 Hours of Le Mans?
JK: It’s very strong. Lots of good teams, lots of good drivers. We’re all going to need to do a good job this year to get good results. It’s going to be very competitive. We saw last year in the WEC that there weren’t many cars – this year, it’s quite different, so the LM P2 looks very strong at the moment.
How do you think the Dome will be at Le Mans in terms of reliability?
JK: The reliability has been very good - always a little bit dangerous to say that! - but in the last lot of testing, the reliability has been very good so, hopefully, that will be one of our strengths this year. The team always do a fantastic job of putting together a car that is in good shape and gives the drivers good reliability.
I’m sure you will be very happy to come back to Le Mans?
JK: Yes, Le Mans is always a great race. You only get to go there once a year and it’s very special, so I’m looking forward to it.
