24h Le Mans
As usual, four categories of cars will be competing in the 83rd Le Mans 24-hour race on 13 and 14 June this year: LM P1 and LM P2 for prototypes - and two GT classes - LM GTE Pro and LM GTE Am.
Each of the four constructors in the category in the 2015 line-up has opted for a different technical approach. Audi, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2014, has chosen to use diesel, unlike its three rivals, and the car harvests energy during braking. Toyota, the World Endurance Champion, uses a supercapacitor that stores retrieved energy while Porsche, which returned to premier endurance competition last year after a 16-year absence swears by its batteries that recover both braking and thermal energy. Finally, Nissan is making its Le Mans comeback in 2015 and has decided to take the opposite course to its opponents, opting for front-wheel drive.
The concepts may be different but technologies are equivalent so competitors are on a level playing field. Values were calculated last year and remain the same until after the 24 Hours.
The rules cater for private teams that do not necessarily have the human and financial means to develop complex energy recovery systems. The category is also open to cars without such systems.
Last year, the LM P1 category, which is for closed cockpits only, was split into two groups, LM-P1-L and LM-P1-H. This year, there will be a single group: LM P1. For the first time since 2011, 14 cars have been selected in the category.
To keep cost to a minimum, the tyre allocation (excluding rain tyres) is 7 sets (two front and two back) for the practice sessions, qualifications and warm-up and 12 sets for the race, plus an extra four tyres for the duration of the competition.
In the same way, the number of engines is limited to 5 for all hybrid prototypes for the whole FIA WEC season (7 for newcomers such as Nissan). Other invitees for the Le Mans 24 Hours, that is the third Audi, Porsche and Nissan cars have 2 engines plus one “joker”.
Minimum weight (excluding driver and fuel):
| LM P1 | LM P1 Hybrid | |
| Minimum weight | 850 kg | 870 kg |
| Petrol engine capacity | max. 5 500 cm3 | No restriction |
| Diesel engine capacity | max. 5 500 cm3 | No restriction |
