24 Hours of Le Mans – A state-of-the-art 3D scanner the scrutineers’ new secret weapon

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest has acquired a revolutionary new inspection and measuring system for scrutineering at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In the room where scrutineering is taking place ahead of Test Day for the 85th 24 Hours of Le Mans, an inspector moves carefully around the #51 Ferrari 488 GTE belonging to AF Corse with a strange-looking gun in his hand. “It’s a 3D scanner that reproduces the surface of the car to check dimensions such as the wheelbase,” Thierry Bouvet, the ACO’s International Technical Delegate, explains.

Technical regulations are a constant source of inspiration for engineers' boundless imagination. This state-of-the-art device ensures that their creativity does not stretch beyond the limits. Extremely accurate scales are integrated into this new platform to weigh the cars too. In this ground-breaking configuration, it is the only system of its kind in the world. Scrutineers can now rely on the cutting edge of technology to inspect the most technically advanced cars in motorsport.
