24 Hours of Le Mans - For sale (6): 2003 Riley & Scott MK IIIC

Have you always dreamed of owning a car that competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans? Does it seem impossible? Perhaps not...Modern day or vintage cars are both for sale, at auction or otherwise. Short summer summary...

Founded in 1990 by Bob Riley and Mark Scott, the Riley & Scott company was both an outfit and a constructor. After its debut in the Trans-Am Series, the constructor turned to the IMSA GT Championship of which the 24 Hours of Daytona was a part. With three victories between 1996 and 1999, the Riley & Scott team got noticed by General Motors as it wanted to assert itself at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Cadillac. Alas, the project fizzled out, but the American Le Mans Series remained on the team-constructor's program in the early 2000s.

This is how the MK III came to see the light of day. Appearing in 2002 at Le Mans, the MK IIIC did not achieve a good result, despite a second place finish at Daytona and a third at the 12 Hours of Sebring the same year.

In 2003, with the 005 chassis for sale, the Riley & Scott campaign was less successful: 25th at Sebring and a retirement at Le Mans where the team wore the name Riley & Scott USA, but was in fact in partnership with the Jim Matthews Racing team which entered the car in the American Le Mans Series. Le Mans week had actually started out well with seventh position on the starting grid thanks to Marc Goossens, today an official Viper driver. But the presence of Jim Matthews' driver line-up did not allow the American outfit to set its sights on victory given the performance of its driver-owner, slowing down in comparison to his teammates Marc Goossens et Christophe Tinseau, who would go on to become a driver for Pescarolo Sport.

The Riley & Scott company dissolved in the bankruptcy of Reynard which had acquired the constructor in 2001. Bob Riley went on to create Riley Technologies, Daytona Prototypes experts.

The ensemble - offered at $299,900 on the website Wirewheel, a company based out of Florida specializing in the sale of vintage cars - includes the No. 005 Riley & Scott MK IIIC chassis, an Elan engine, an X-Trac gearbox and Dunlop tyres.
