24 Hours of Le Mans - Goodbye to the Circuit's guardian angel

"Aux Portes du Circuit", the restaurant and bar, has been something of a landmark at the 24 Hours for the past 39 years. But this year is the last...

The bar's name translates as "On the Circuit's doorstep" but it could just have easily have been called "the Edge of Heaven". Its owner Jeannine Belnou has been welcoming drivers and fans here, right beside the main entrance to the circuit, for thirty-nine years now. "We converted a private house into this bar and restaurant in 1976," she sighs, with more than a hint of nostalgia.

Jeannine later divorced but stayed at the helm, running things single-handedly. Over the years, the place has become a haven of peace for people coming to the 24 Hours. Especially "Monsieur Henri", as Jeannine calls Henri Pescarolo, full of respect and admiration. Pescarolo was one her most regular customers from among the legends of Le Mans. Jacky Ickx was another. Over the last four decades, generations of drivers have bathed in the warm welcome offered by Jeannine, bar owner turned friend and confidante of some of the big names but lesser-known amateurs too. "So much has happened within these walls," she smiles, glancing around at the photos, old and new, pinned to the wall.

Jeannine has also shared her enthusiasm with her customers, many of whom have become friends. Among them the British, Dutch, Australians, and Americans... people from around the world come in and pull up a bar stool to enjoy a break in Jeannine's unforgettable company. This year, they are all somewhat melancholy. This weekend will be Jeannine's final 24 Hours behind the bar. "I'm holding back the tears because I don't want to spoil the party," she says bravely. "It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I'm 62 and it's time I found a bit more time for my grandchildren... and for myself!"
Jeannine, who has never left her little corner of paradise, is now thinking about travelling. She'll finally have time to accept the countless invitations she's had from her clients over the years. This Sunday evening, the Circuit des 24 Hours will be saying goodbye its guardian angel!
