24 Hours of Le Mans - Martino Finotto (1933-2014)

Martino Finotto, who participated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1974 and 1985, has lost his battle with illness. Having made his fortune in chemistry, the Italian tried his hand at touring cars before turning to endurance, as a driver as well as a team owner.

Winner of the European Touring Car Championship in 1979 at the wheel of a BMW he entered himself, Martino Finotto then participated in the World Championship of Marques in 1980, then the predecessor of the current FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the American IMSA Camel Lights.

For his six participations in La Sarthe, Finotto crossed the finish line three times, but never made it to the top 10 overall, his best ranking having been 14th place in 1981. He did nonetheless score a victory in the Gr.5 class in 1980 with his faithful teammate Carlo Facetti at the wheel of a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, a car that did not faciliatate the win overall.

To his friends and family, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest expresses its sincerest condolences.
