24 Hours of Le Mans – Michael Fassbender, a new episode of Road to Le Mans

Michael Fassbender was first invited to Le Mans two years ago as an official guest and ambassador for the FIA’s 3,500 Lives road safety campaign. Last weekend, the actor and endurance aficionado returned as a driver for his Road to Le Mans series.

Michael Fassbender could be found in the Porsche paddock at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend. He was there as an observer, albeit a very special observer. Before the 59 cars entered in the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans hit the track, the part-Irish part-German endurance enthusiast did his own laps behind the wheel as he competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup. This new feat adds another string to his bow of driving expertise; he has also been competing in the GTE class of the European Le Mans Series with Proton Racing since the start of the season. All in the name of his Road to Le Mans series which documents his dream of competing at the 24 Hours. “I got to race at Spa Francorchamps and Nurburgring recently, and now I’ve had the chance to experience the full-sized circuit of Le Mans. A new level! What a track! The speed, some of the sections and corners like Indianapolis and the Porsche curves, are incredible. I was impressed by the atmosphere of this race two years ago when I went round as a passenger, but this weekend I’ve realised the full scale of the legend.”

He also got to test Le Mans in the rain as the weather wasn’t as clement for the Porsche Carrera Cup as it was for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He has yet to drive the iconic 13 kilometres at night though. So, what will Michael Fassbender be doing at Le Mans in 2021? “Tune in for the next episode,” he grins. The next series of Road to Le Mans is due out at the end of 2020.
