24 Hours of Le Mans – Rookie Ferdinand Habsburg: driving ecological progress

Austrian driver Ferdinand Habsburg wants to compete in a carbon neutral discipline and is pushing for endurance racing to achieve that goal. Not content with setting the pace on track in LMP2, Habsburg is among the leaders in acting for the climate.

His car, the Team WRT #31 Oreca 07-Gibson, sports his campaign slogan Drive Fast, Act Faster. The idea is to support the efforts of the discipline to be carbon neutral, raising awareness in the pit lane and beyond of the importance of working together to combat the climate crisis. The 24 Hours of Le Mans rookie explains:“I travelled far and wide in the inter-season break. A lot of things became clear over the past year. There were more and more fires, all over the world. I love watersports and I realised that in the ocean I could be surfing on plastic. I said to myself that I could do something that wouldn’t be in contradiction with my profession. I looked into it and found that I it was easy to change a number of little things that in the end, make a big difference.”

One of Habsburg’s main ideals is to ensure that future generations can still enjoy racing. “I started with what has the most impact: trucks and tyres. I started talking to tyre and lubricant manufacturers and race organisers to make sure recycling systems were in place.” The Austrian wants to make an ecological attitude easy to adopt for everyone.
The #25 and #26 Aurus 01-Gibsons also bear the Drive Fast, Act Faster slogan in support of the campaign. “We’ll see where it goes. As a driver, it’s nice to be the one to instigate a project like this.”

In line with its founding principle to drive innovation and its commitment to sustainable development, the ACO is introducing an award for the team that demonstrates social and environmental responsibility, in particular showing year-on-year improvements in that area.

The prize aims to encourage competitors to be creative and take a stand on ecology and solidarity. There will be two main criteria: low-impact logistics and innovative responsible action towards the environment and society.
