24 Hours of Le Mans - The 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed pays tribute to Derek Bell

At the end of June, one of the big events dedicated to the history of motorsports will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Derek Bell's first win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The winningest British driver in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be one of the individuals honoured June 25-28 at one of the most famous events in the U.K. Derek Bell won five victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - with remarkable loyalty: three wins with Jacky Ickx (1975-81-82), two with Hans Joachim Stück and Al Holbert (1986-87). Here are five stories to evoke a living legend in endurance.

-In 26 participations, Bell took the start of the 24 Hours at the wheel of a Porsche 14 times and won four of his five victories (1981-82-86-87) at the wheel of a Porsche prototype.

-He competed in his first 24 Hours at the wheel of a Ferrari in 1970. Two years later, it was at the wheel of a Ferrari GT that he passed under his first checkered flag at Le Mans, with an eighth place finish at the wheel of a Ferrari 365 GTB 4.

-In addition to Porsche, he also raced for Mirage in the early 1970s. Loyalty rewarded with the win in 1975.

-In 1986 and 1987, Bell was a member, along with Holbert and Stück, of the first three-driver driver line-up to win back to back at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

-Bell has also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice with his son, Justin. It was at his side that he claimed his final podium finish at the 24 Hours in 1995, at his next-to-last participation, with third place shared with their fellow countryman Andy Wallace at the wheel of a McLaren F1 GTR.
