What became the McLaren F1 GTR was not destined as a race car. It was under driver Ray Bellm's impulse that the British marque transformed its road car into one capable of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, thumbing its nose at the prototypes.

Two individuals played a major role in the road car's modification into a race car: Head Designer Barry Lett who took care of the exterior appearance, and Technician Phil Harding who transformed the chassis.
