Here is a round-up of the highlights in each class during the first sixty minutes of action.
LMP
- The #30 Oreca 07 LMP2 of E-Team WRT is out in front. It leads from the #20 car of Team Redline with Formula One driver Max Verstappen in the hot seat. The #16 car of Veloce Esports 2 in the hands of Stoffel Vandoorne lies third.
- The #4 Oreca 07 LMP2 of ByKolles-Burst Esport started in pole position. Driver Tom Dillmann built up a lead of 2.5 seconds over the #30 car, but picked up a drive-through penalty for jumping the start. This car is now lying in 15th position.
- Brendon Hartley of Toyota Gazoo Racing lost control of the #08 Oreca 07 LMP2 and left the track at Indianapolis on the second lap. It is now in 47th place.
- Starting in 18th position on the grid, the #7 Oreca 07 LMP2 of Toyota Gazoo Racing driven by José Mária López has moved swiftly up the field to seventh place after an hour.
- The #14 Oreca 07 driven by Fernando Alonso touched the #94 of Simona de Silvestro approaching Tertre Rouge. The Spanish champion was hit with a penalty and is still in the pits.
GTE
- Loek Hartog in the #88 Porsche 911 RSR of Dempsey-Proton Racing dominated the first hour of the race. However, the #93 Porsche 911 RSR of Porsche Esports Team now leads from the #95 Aston Martin Vantage AMR.
- A battle is raging behind the front two between Aston Martin, Porsche, Corvette and Ferrari.
- The #52 Ferrari 488 GTE of Ferrari-AF Corse, driven by Formula One star Charles Leclerc, is in 10th position in the class.
- The #54 Ferrari 488 GTE, the Strong Together entry representing the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, lies in 16th place in the class.
