24 Hours of Le Mans - What do drivers do on Test Day?

The Test Day is vital for all competitors in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. We asked prototype and GT drivers exactly what is expected of them out on track tomorrow.

Kazuki Nakajima (#5 Toyota TS050 HYBRID, LM P1): “Basically we have to work on the set-up, it is time to run our Le Mans package on the Le Mans circuit. We need to find out how it works and to optimise it. We also need to test the tyres. For all the drivers it is a kind of warm-up to get used to the track again, to get in pace and stay out of trouble.”

Léo Roussel (#28Morgan Nissan LM P2, LM P2): “We’ll be checking on the engine change. I’ll do the first stint to make sure all is well. Next my teammates Inès Taittinger and Rémy Striebig, who are both rookies, will take over to do their mandatory ten laps.

Then I’ll get back in to go through the set-ups. I mean I’ll check the aerodynamics and the mechanics, things like the roll-bar, the suspension, the springs, the rear wing.

We’ll also be testing the various tyres provided by Michelin, soft, medium and medium hard.  We’ll see which is most suitable, even though the track will be green. [Most of the circuit is a public road with little or no rubber on it. Therefore the traction will increase as the day goes on.]

Rémy and Inès will then carry on learning as much as they can about the circuit and the car.

Matthew Howson (#47 Oreca 05 Nissan, LM P2):

First we’ll be checking that all is well on the car because it has been completely dismantled and rebuilt over the winter. Tomorrow, I’ll be getting used to the car because I haven’t driven it since last year. Same for Tsugio Matsuda who’ll be driving the car on this circuit for the first time [he was with Nissan in LM P1 last year]. Next we’ll have to test all the tyres. Richard Bradley, has collected quite a bit of data but we need more. As the weather is a bit unsettled, we’ll probably get the chance to test various types.

There are lots of straights at Le Mans and we’re often flat out. We want to minimise downforce to maximise speed. There are several options available and we’ll try and test as many as we can tomorrow.

Gianmaria Bruni (#51 Ferrari F488 Italia AF Corse, LMGTE Pro):

We’ll be seeing how the car behaves on the track. Then we’ll swap drivers so that everyone gets some laps in. We’ll work on the brakes to prepare the race and clock up as many kilometres as we can to get to know the car. That means the engineers will more information on the tyres, the fuel consumption for the race.
