On the 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has selected thirty historic cars grouped into three per decade, all up for public vote by race fans. To participate, click HERE and choose one per decade. The vote is open until the 15th of January 2013. Each of the thirty cars will have a short introduction. Today it is the Aston Martin DBR1 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959.
Aston Martin is another great name in British era of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 50's. Created in 1914, the marque was revived in 1947 by entrepreneur David Brown (hence the letters DB on all models produced since then). In 1959, the DBR1 was is in its third Le Mans, and has not yet seen the chequered flag of the 24 hours. But its time had finally come for glory. The prototype Ferrari, winner in the previous year, did not finish in 1959. The DBR1 scored a superb 1-2 finish, Shelby-Salvadori ahead of Trintignant-Frère. Subsequently, the British manufacturer has had success in the GT class with two consecutive wins in 2007 and 2008. In 1964, five years after what is still today their only overall victory in Sarthe, Aston Martin became a screen legend with a secret agent named Bond... James Bond.
