A BBC documentary on Sir Chris Hoy's experience at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

It's between a childhood dream and a crazy gamble straight out of a Hollywood movie! The first Brit to win six Olympic gold medals, Sir Chris Hoy dreamed of competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it nearly turned into a nightmare…

After the London Olympic Games in 2012, Sir Chris Hoy hung up his track cycling helmet and became a racing driver with the goal of participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In four years, the Brit overcame every obstacle and forged a step-by-step path, first in GT with Nissan, then in LM P3 in the European Le Mans Series, a class in which he won in 2015, before moving into LM P2 this year.

To prepare for the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, in which he drove Greaves Motorsport's second car, Sir Chris Hoy took the start at the first two ELMS rounds with Algarve Pro Racing. Unfortunately, Greaves Motorsport's second car as well as the Portuguese team ended up figuring on the Le Mans reserve list. The British outfit then decided to withdraw its application, but the situation changed a few weeks from the race: following the withdrawal of another competitor, the Algarve Pro Racing team was invited to Le Mans and invited Sir Chris Hoy to join.

A technical problem began one hour into the race before Sir Chris Hoy could even take the wheel: was his dream about to be crushed? No, fortunately he was able to take part in the race and Algarve Pro Racing's #25 Ligier JS P2-Nissan even crossed the finish line, in 12th place in the LM P2 class, but no matter: for once Sir Chris Hoy wouldn't win, but to pass under the checkered flag at the 24 Hours of Le Mans after only four years of motorsports competition was enough to put a smile on his face...

According to the BBC website, the documentary "200 mph at Le Mans" should be online shortly after its broadcast on BBC Two, Sunday, 9 October at 9:00 p.m.
