This year's 24 Hours of Le Mans on 10-11 June marked a century since the very first running of the legendary race. The Centenary was the biggest motorsport event of 2023, exceeding all expectations thanks to supertalented drivers, breathtaking cars, renowned manufacturers and most importanty a staggering 325,000 spectators in a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Some were attending the race for the first time, while others have been coming for decades. The same can be said for certain drivers on the track as they raced cars equipped with state-of-the-art technology alongside veteran winners.
And so a new century in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans got underway when the official starter, basketball star LeBron James, released 62 cars ready to prove their mettle through speed and precision in the light of day and shadow of night.
Each hour of racing brought its share of twists of fate and extraordinary exploits. All met with unwavering determination in the face of risks, fatigue and unpredictible weather. The race reached its climax in the early morning, when Toyota and Ferrari engaged in a merciless battle. Then, a tiny error by Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa at the wheel of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's #8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid fixed the outcome for good, leaving the #51 Ferrari 499P #51 shared by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi to triumph.
Victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans is forever elusive, never certain until the chequered flag. The top step on the overall podium at the historic Centenary will always belong to Ferrari. A new era is upon us, with Ferrari, Toyota, Cadillac, Porsche, Peugeot, Alpine, BMW, Lamborghini and Isotta Fraschini all on the same playing field in 2024. New chapters in the history of the greatest endurance race in the world are about to be written!
