A quick overview of the 2018 12 Hours of Sebring

The top step on the 12 Hours of Sebring podium was claimed by Nicolas Lapierre, Pipo Derani and Johannes van Overbeek, but many figures from the 24 Hours of Le Mans were present in the paddock in Florida.

- Nicolas Lapierre won the 12 Hours of Sebring for the second time since 2011 when he reached the top step on the podium along with Loïc Duval and Olivier Panis at the wheel of the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP fielded by Team Oreca Matmut. This was also the second victory for Pipo Derani and Johannes van Overbeek after 2016's win.

- Hugues de Chaunac attended the 12 Hours of Sebring, monitoring the various ORECA 07s entered in the race. Recall that ORECA is currently handling the development of the Rebellion R13 set to take part in the 2018-2019 FIA WEC Super Season.

- A French driver made his mark at the 12 Hours of Sebring during the qualifying session. Tristan Vautier, seen in the IndyCar Series, scored pole position with the Cadillac Dpi ahead of Olivier Pla. The two drivers made contact in the first turn, forcing a retirement for Olivier Pla (official Ford driver at Le Mans), whereas Tristan Vautier's race ended in a pile of tires less than two hours from the checkered flag. He has never competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but is in contact with some teams.

- Reinhold Joest was in the paddock at Sebring this weekend. He has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times (1984, 1985, 1996 and 1997) with his team Joest Racing, then 10 times with Audi Sport Team Joest. Now his outfit runs the two Mazda RT24-P Dpis fielded.

- The 2018 12 Hours of Sebring marked Jan Magnussen's 20th participation in the race, unfortunately the occasion brought with it no luck: the #3 Chevrolet Corvette was plagued with numerous technical problems (flat tire, electrical and steering troubles). The Danish driver will also be celebrating his 20th participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. The record at Sebring is held by Hurley Haywood with 28 participations. He also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1977 (Porsche 936 with Jacky Ickx and Jürgen Barth) and in 1983 (Porsche 956 with Vern Schuppan and Al Holbert).

- Other drivers well-known to the 24 Hours of Le Mans were also in Florida this weekend: Ron Fellows (nine participations including two wins in the GTS class in 2001 and 2002), Didier Theys (13), Wayne Taylor (13 including a victory in LMP1 in 1998), Johnny O’Connell (15 including four class wins), Stefan Johansson (winner at the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans) and Dindo Capello, three-time Le Mans winner and five-time Sebring winner, achievements that earned him induction in the Sebring Hall of Fame this year.

- Patrick Dempsey was at Sebring this weekend in preparation for the film he is producing called "The Art of Racing in the Rain." The American star is the co-owner of Dempsey Proton Racing slated to field two Porsche 911 RSRs in LMGTE Am at the next edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

- A.J. Foyt, the 2018 12 Hours of Sebring Grand Marshal, was unable to attend the event due to poor health. The winner of the 1967 24 Hours of Mans with a Ford Mk IV, now 83 years young, fell victim to a bee attack at his ranch.

- Of the 130 drivers at the start of the 66th edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring, more than 40 have been confirmed to participate in the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans.
