For its return to Pikes Peak in Colorado, Volkswagen recruited two-time 24 Hours winner Romain Dumas with Audi and Porsche, marques within the German manufacturer's group. Dumas, three-time winner of the hill climb, will drive a 100% electric prototype and will have the support of a constructor for the first time ever.
Last June, the French driver successfully defended his trophy despite a broken spark plug early in the rally race. This year, he will not fall victim to the same problem given the fact he is set to take the wheel of an electric prototype, the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak that scored pole position in qualifiying in 3:16.083.
The two-time Le Mans winner will start the 19.9 hillclimb from the pole early in the morning with the goal of beating the record for an electric prototype held by Rhys Millen since 2016, though he is most certainly also hoping to clock a faster time than Sébastien Loeb and his Peugeot did in 2016.
